Department of Music

The University of Mississippi

Greeting from Robert Riggs

Welcome to the Department of Music at the University of Mississippi, the state’s flagship university. Our mission is to prepare students for professional careers by offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in music education, performance and choral conducting. Students entering our programs become part of a vibrant community led by a distinguished and enthusiastic faculty, with 25 full-time and 12 adjunct members, dedicated to teaching, research and performance. Thus, our students – more than 170 majors – receive the rigorous individual attention necessary to develop their full potential. As a department within the College of Liberal Arts, we are also committed to offering stimulating courses and performance opportunities for non-majors.

We support a complete spectrum of ensembles, both large (bands, choirs, orchestra, opera) and small (chamber music, jazz bands, percussion ensembles, African drum and dance ensemble), which serve the dual functions of creating vital performing and learning experiences as well as enriching the cultural climate of the entire University and Oxford communities. Our students, faculty and audiences enjoy world-class acoustics in exciting performance venues: the 400-seat David H. Nutt Auditorium in the Music Building; the 1,200-seat Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts across the street; the 150-seat theater in Meek Hall; and the 250-seat Paris-Yates Chapel with its spectacular Baroque pipe organ.

The University of Mississippi is renowned for the beauty of its meticulously maintained campus, and Oxford is justly considered one of America’s most livable, attractive and artistically dynamic college towns. For more information, please explore our website or contact us, and then come for a campus visit. You are always welcome.
